About Melissa Lakey
From the windows of her studio in Joshua Tree, Melissa Lakey, looks out into the Mojave Desert. When she was growing up she dreamed of being a cowboy, but life takes turns and Melissa ended up being an artist instead. Now her paintings feature cowboys riding through the night landscapes. Her work is a portrait of the landscapes, people and animals of the American Southwest, captured in a beautiful dream like spirit.

Destination: Camp Wandawega
A few hours drive outside of Chicago, you will find Camp Wandawega, a unique place with a rich history. Originally built in 1925 at the height of the Prohibition Era, it was a safe haven for a cast of outlaws, criminals on the run and other interesting characters looking for liquor, prostitution and gambling. After its illicit adventures, the property was purchased by the Catholic Church and in the 1970’s it became a Latvian Church Camp for Catholic Latvians. In 2004 David and Tereasa, the new owners, purchased the grounds and they have been running Camp Wandawega since, providing a getaway from the city life and a return to other, simpler, times. Back in 2020, we hosted a Summer Camp, and now we are excited to return to enjoy the winter landscapes of Wandawega.
