Destination: Galápagos Islands
A long way off the coast of Ecuador you can find the Galápagos islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Its isolated terrain is home to a diversity of plant and animal species that is unlike any other place in the world. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the islands served as a sanctuary and hideaway for pirates and whalers. In 1835 Charles Darwin visited the islands, and his observations formed the inspiration for his Theory of Evolution.

A little word from Cleon…

"For years, I'd heard about the Galapagos as this far-off isolated place, out of human reach, where species had developed distinct traits because they'd been entirely remote and unbothered. It had a Utopian overtone, like in a world we've lost touch with. A natural place that humans hadn't corrupted. So, I wanted to go on the trip as both a journey to see the destination and a chance to confront a personal and cultural myth that, for all time, has lived deep within us all. "Is untouched nature somehow equivalent to innocence, and are we, humans, the harbingers of destruction?"

This question looms heavy as existential dread casts its shadow in the face of climate crisis, extinctions, and wars. There is a longing in all of us to return to a world where we can escape our burdens. And for some reason, these illusions are always set in far-off times and places. But as the adage goes, wherever you go, there you are. How we see ourselves and the stories we tell ourselves could be the problem. Could we be in a deep state of denial, not understanding base truths about our relationship to nature?

Unable to look in the mirror and accept that just as we were once young, one day, we too might die. That day and night, life and death, love and hate, good and evil, creation and destruction, beginning and end are all inherently bound. And that the peace I'm searching for can be found simply by the acceptance that we are part of, not apart from, nature."
