About Keya Tama
Keya Tama is a South African artist based, nowadays based in New York City. His practice explores the contrast between ancient iconographies and modern folklore. Utilizing reoccurring motifs of people, animals, and nature, his murals tell stories of the past and the future. As a true creative communicator, Keya is no stranger to collaboration with various artists, artists such as Elléna Lourens, Seth Pimentel, Faith XLVII and many others.

A road trip along South Africa’s Garden Route winds through a lush tapestry of forests, lagoons, and dramatic coastline, making every kilometer feel like its own miniature adventure. As you cruise past quaint seaside towns, the scent of salt and pine fills the air, inviting you to slow down and soak in the scenery. As you are making your way down the Garden Route you’ll understand why this route is often called one of the most beautiful road journeys in the world.

A little word from Keya…

"On my trip I wanted to see more of the South African landscape and feel connected to it again. I sensed that being on the road would awaken something from childhood, old memories and the particular feeling of moving through the country for hours at a time. It felt less like discovering something new and more like returning to something that had been waiting for me. The abundance of space felt deeply meaningful to me. Moments of looking at animals and feeling them stare back stayed with me in a profound way. Two of my friends Seth Pimentel and Johnny Allison joined me on the trip, and our conversations about our shared histories, and our relationships to South Africa and the natural world, left me deeply inspired.

My artwork was inspired by the quiet force of the land and by the way rural space can make time, memory, and atmosphere feel more present. As we drove through seemingly endless mountains, hills, valleys, and lakes, I was struck by the subtle emotions of the landscape and by the way one environment blended into the next. In these spaces, the sky, moon, sun, and stars felt less like background and more like active presences within the land, giving it a sense of stillness, scale, and quiet intensity.

The work brings together scenes of people and nature in harmony, reflecting the simplicity of rural life and the deeper rhythms that shape it. Executed in desaturated monochromatic pastels and earth tones, the composition reduces form and color to their essentials, allowing pattern, geometry, and emotional tone to emerge slowly. As in much of my practice, the imagery is refined into minimal, symbolic forms that draw on both ancient and contemporary visual languages, suggesting fragments of memory, modern folktales, and the enduring relationship between people and place. Rather than documenting the landscape directly, I’ve attempted to translate its atmosphere: its restraint, its spaciousness, and the way it seemed to carry time within it. What stayed with me most was the feeling that the land itself had a voice, quiet but unmistakable, and that its presence could be felt through contrast, repetition, and the slow unfolding of form."
