About Jillian Evelyn
Through contorting the female figure with graphic shapes and a limited color palette, Jillian Evelyn’s work explores the struggle of womanhood and the anxiety that arises from contemporary societal expectations. After having lived in Los Angeles for several years, she moved back to her beloved Detroit, where she studied and found her first love for visual expression which eventually turned her onto the path of becoming a full time painter.

Travel Diary

Day One.

Driving from Boston to New Hampshire can sometimes be a piece of cake, but most of the  time you’re not the only one escaping the city. After 50 mins of city traffic I finally made it out of Boston. I hit a few more traffic jams - but there is something true about New Hampshire’s state slogan - live free or die.

As the speed limit finally lifted from 65 to 70 - I felt lighter as the trees became more dense. Pulling in to my retreat and my home for the next 5 days - all I could think was ‘ I could live here. Can I live here? I need to live here’.

Don’t tell me pugs can’t hike.

Tater and I conquered cascade path…OK, it was only 3.2 miles with a 708 ft elevation gain, but I am still proud of him. The large part of the trail consisted of rocks and tree roots to utilize for footing as we made our climb, my favorite kind of trail.
There were waterfalls, tree roots engulfing boulders, and so much moss. I love moss.

I didn’t see much wild life on the trail with the exception of butterflies and a couple red squirrels. On the drive back to camp,  nature did not let me down. I came across a black bear cub enjoying himself in someone’s yard!
This was my first bear sighting and felt pretty magical.

A leisurely day filled with naps and reading. We did venture out to a small town about 30 mins away to try a James Beard Finalist Ice Cream shop - Super Secret Ice Cream - I had Cabot maple and strawberry and rhubarb in a waffle cone, it was delicious.

I came across these swimmers at an emptied  community pool, and I can’t stop thinking about them.

Today we chose a short hike with a suiting name: Artist’s Bluff. The trial was STEEP but a fun climb and worth the view. Bopped around the nearest town, Lincoln and indulged in a maple soft serve. Topped the day off with a barrel sauna at sunset.

Truly a perfect day and perfect trip. I will miss it up here but am so grateful for this opportunity. Moving to New England has been a weird transition, this trip was a great reminder of what the east coast has to offer. I will definitely be coming back.
