Spotlight: islands
Islands offer a world apart—surrounded by sea, shaped by isolation, and deeply connected to nature. Life moves at a different pace on islands all over the world, slower and more attuned to the rhythms of tides, weather, and community. Cultures on islands often develop uniquely, preserving traditions, languages, and ways of life found nowhere else. The sense of closeness—to both people and environment—defines island living. It’s a life of limits and abundance, where simplicity meets deep-rooted identity. Maybe the artist Nigel Peake, who traveled to the Scilly Isles for The Jaunt, defined it best when he said “Islands are uncanny places. They can be difficult to get to and tricky to return from.”
In our spotlight on islands from all over the world, you can find a series of limited edition silkscreen prints inspired by trips to various islands. From the Scilly Isles to Jamaica, from Jeju Island to Sicily, and from Møkster to Lastavo. Below you can find a selection of prints inspired by the unique characteristics of life on an island.

About Remed
Remed’s first moves into the art world date back to 1995, when he discovered the art of painting inside a atelier in Lille France. For a long time he worked solely inside, taking refuge in the privacy and quietness of his room or studio. After due time, his desire to share and show his work led him to work on the streets, and this is most likely where you have encountered one of his many murals. With simple yet effective shapes and composition Remed draws you into his work, to introduce you to his emotions, feelings and evolution of thoughts. As Remed says it best himself: “I live what I feel, I paint what I live”

His use of graphic lines, compositions and a refined color palette makes his graphic design look like art, and vice versa. Exploring the elemental use of shapes is at the foreground of Cody’s work, trying to figure out how shapes can work together in perfect harmony. The shapes are elementary, but at the same time immensely complex, and Cody is here to make sense of it all.

About KC Ortiz
Born in Chicago, and currently residing in Copenhagen, KC Ortiz has a rich history that has informed him and his worldview to this day. After an active graffiti career and gaining a notorious reputation in and around Chicago, he had a series of run-ins with the law and ended in prison. While incarcerated Ortiz developed an interest in current events through the work of photojournalists in newspapers. After getting out, Ortiz worked as a photojournalist in combat zones, and ultimately he landed back in love with art again. The work of KC Ortiz is an exploration on survival, preservation, and resistance in a world that is rapidly changing under political upheaval, economic inequality, misinformation, and technological advances. By examining and questioning both our individual and collective roles and responsibilities in these current times and to future generations and civilizations, Ortiz visualizes the struggle of these questions.

Combining the worlds of running with art is not a very obvious crossover, however the California-based artist Travis Weller has found a beautiful balance between the two. With an art practice that primarily entails oil paints and collages, Travis is creating abstracted reflections of his surroundings, surroundings that are increasingly more and more nature focused as his endurance running is taking him further and further along the trails.

About Niels Shoe Meulman
Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman is a visual artist, known for his gestural paintings which reveal vivid traces of Graffiti and Calligraphy. He revolutionized the art of writing when he initiated the Calligraffiti movement, claiming “a word is an image and writing is painting”. Being a graffiti pioneer from Amsterdam, Shoe worked with New York counterparts such as Dondi White, Rammellzee and Keith Haring in the 1980s. Equally influenced by the great painters of Abstract Expressionism, he gradually found his own way to translate street attitude to gallery walls. Experimenting within the traditional medium of paint-on-canvas, but also unafraid to venture into new realms like conceptual installations and poetry, Niels Shoe Meulman keeps pushing the limits of Urban Contemporary.

Destination: Galápagos Islands
A long way off the coast of Ecuador you can find the Galápagos islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Its isolated terrain is home to a diversity of plant and animal species that is unlike any other place in the world. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the islands served as a sanctuary and hideaway for pirates and whalers. In 1835 Charles Darwin visited the islands, and his observations formed the inspiration for his Theory of Evolution.
