Fieldwork
In preparation for this exhibition, the artist participated in two journeys with The Jaunt that guided his approach to form, material, and color. A 2023 trip to Denmark centered on visiting the home of Finn Juhl and the legacy of Danish modernism, where design in its purest form is omnipresent. A second trip to upstate New York at the start of 2025 offered the opportunity to explore American Minimalism, viewing works by Ellsworth Kelly, Donald Judd, Frank Stella, and others, alongside contemporary artists like Josh Sperling, Robert Mangold, and Bernar Venet.
Additionally, a number of works in the exhibition were generated through a process Edmiston calls Chance Forms, in which a large-language model randomly paired and rotated shapes drawn from his ongoing digital catalogue. Together, these experiences broaden the conversation of the work, bridging Danish design, New York abstraction, and a distinctly Californian sensibility defined by material presence, form, and technology.

The Jaunt #091 - Copenhagen, Denmark
“My main reason for traveling to Denmark with my Jaunt trip was the late Danish designer Finn Juhl. Being able to visit the House of Finn Juhl exceeded my expectations for sure. The house itself was immaculate and immediately takes you to a different era. I’ve seen so many images and felt so familiar with each room but once you step inside, it’s a whole different world. I’ve never been in a home with that level of sophistication and simplicity. Every object effortlessly coexists in this space which feels like a curated museum. It is truly a work of art. The showroom does an incredible job of recreating the essence and prestige of Finn Juhl’s legacy. After chatting with one of the partners, it was very clear how important to them it is to maintain the craftsmanship and honor the design and original specs for each piece. As someone who overly obsesses over details, being in an environment where every single aspect of design was considered, I felt right at home.”
The Jaunt #115 - Buffalo, NEW YORK
“The lush forests in the state of New York totally caught me off-guard and was one of the biggest takeaways. From Buffalo where I began all Many of my visits during the trip were to massive sculpture parks, where much of the work was based in abstraction. The pieces that stuck with me were giant, single-shaped works that forced you to focus on the simplicity and purity of form. The finish, scale, and location were key factors as well, but for the sake of the print, I wanted to concentrate on shape and color. With previous screen prints, I would essentially fill the page with artwork, whereas my piece for The Jaunt centers on a floating shape, with an additional shape cropped inside. The colors are pulled from photographs I took in New York, with the outer flood of green representing the scenery I was surrounded by.”"
